DUSTPAN & BRUSH SET

RESEARCH

For this project, I studied how a user interacted with an existing dustpan and broom set, and documented her feeback. Through using the product, the user noted she was dissatisfied with:
• The size of the dust pan and brush handle
• How dirty the bristles looked after use
• The bland colors
• How awkward it felt to hold the brush; she would rather hold the brush downward than sideways

We were required build the dustpan out of vacuum-formed polystyrene; make the handle out of MDF; and be able to hang the dustpan and brush on the wall. We accomplished this in 11 days.

User Quotes

“I live in an apartment so I would never need something so big. Where would I even store this?”
“The bristles are so gross.”

Prototypes

Based on feedback from my classmates and professor, I decided on the second prototype due to its more eye-pleasing, module shape. They enjoyed the look of when the brush was stored in the dustpan, it completed an overall shape.

Improvements

• Brush bristles are hidden inside the dustpan
• Brush is held downwards
• Dustpan is able to hang by the handle rather than a string or a notch
• Perfect size for canvas and desk clean-up
• Module shape is pleasing to the eyes
• When the dustpan and brush are connected, it completes an overall shape
• Brush handle fits better in the palm of the hand

final design

My dustpan was constructed out of two pieces of vacuum formed styrene;
I used bondo to fill in the seams before sanding and priming it.
