Twist&Clean

RESEARCH

For this project, my partner, Kelly Numamoto and I studied users’ experience with cleaning a toilet. Through interviews, quick-fail models, and personal trial-and-error, we noted these main concerns:

• Some don’t clean the sides or back of the toilet because it’s a hassle to reach
• No one enjoys cleaning, because of how gross a toilet can be
• There are too many tools needed to clean the whole toilet
• Most users just clean the toilet bowl and seat

We were required to create a product that would make a chore less of a chore for a specific company. For our team, we chose to focus on cleaning a toilet for the company, Joseph Joseph. When we reached our final design, we realized we could not only solve how to clean a toilet, but how to clean the whole bathroom with just one tool. Our final models were rendered in Rhino 3D and Keyshot. This project included intensive research and ideation, and had to be organized to be presented to guest designers at the end. We accomplished this in 20 days.

User Quotes
“Cleaning a toilet is so gross”
“The interior is easy with a brush, but the rest of it is tough and takes time”
“It would be easier if I had one tool that did it all”
“I hate having to clean my rags after cleaning a toilet, so I use paper towels”
“I never put away my cleaning products after I use them; it’s so much work”

CONCEPTING
Joseph Joseph

We took inspirations from existing Joseph Joseph products on our final design. We also discovered the most used colors in Joseph Joseph products and used them in our final design.

Mechanical Function

Comic of how to change the brush heads. The notch on the back of the brushes nestles into the container, and the pole twists off from the heads

In-Action

Using the handle, you can pick up the whole container to deposit it in a shower or tub to clean without ever having to touch a dirty brush. Due to its compact and stylized design, there’s no need to hide your cleaning tools after using it.
